SOME IMAGINATION, HUH?

MICE TECH IS HERE

New Product Hunt mascot just dropped.

Jk, but if we were upgrading our kitty in the Google Glass, a mouse in a VR headset would be quite fitting.

That’s because scientists have made tiny little VR goggles to study brain activity in lab mice.

“But how does it stay on?!” you ask. The goggles actually go all around the mouse instead of just the head, but they still look like goggles overall.

Unfortunately for these rodents, they did not get transported into a Michelin-rated kitchen in Paris. Instead, they were shown things to imitate predators swooping overhead so the scientists could map the mice’s brain activity as they responded to the threat. However, the researchers noted they may switch things up and let them hunt insects for the next one.

If you want to burrow deeper, you can read the paper on the technique here.

Talking points from Planet Internet

🍑 Color of the year: Brace for all things peach. Pantone announced that Peach Fuzz is the color of 2024 five days ago, and I’ve already gotten ads for peachy rugs, paint, and shoes.

🍿 We’re still watching: For the first time ever, Netflix has released data on viewing time across its catalog, starting with the first half of 2023. It’s a boring spreadsheet, but if you want recs on what to watch, go download it.

🦷 Not smiling now. Smile Direct Club, the direct-to-consumer company for clear teeth aligners, shut down, leaving its customers in the middle of treatment stranded. The site now reads: “Please consult… your local dentist.” Ouch.
